Night Terror: A True Story

If you woke up to someone standing over your bed in the middle of the night with their hands in a position to hurt you – how do you think you would react? Would you scream or reach for the pepper spray on your nightstand? Would you tremble in fear?

A few weeks ago, my husband and I went to bed at about 10:30, and shortly after midnight, the light outside my patio door to the bedroom turned on and woke me up. 

When I opened my eyes, a woman was standing over my bed with her hands in a position to choke me. Immediately, something struck me as odd. It appeared as is she was pushing her hands against an unseen force that was holding her back. 

I Shall Not Fear...

I also realized that there was no fear in me at all. I was at total peace. There was no rush of adrenalin.

In a firm, staccato-type voice I said, “You cannot touch me.” She continued to push against the invisible barrier until something caught her eye. She turned her head and instantaneously fled. I have no clue what she saw but it terrified her. I assume my guardian angel horrified her. 

As she sprinted off the patio, she pulled a 75-pound wooden bench behind her as a means of protecting her from whatever she had seen in hopes it would not follow her. I could hear her heavy footsteps down our long driveway.

My husband sleepily said, “Who are you talking to?” 

I told him to go back to sleep and I would tell him about it in the morning.

“The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord” Psalm 97:5. No matter where you are or what may be threatening you, the Lord is with you. He sends His guardian angels to protect you. When you are aware of that presence, your fears, anxieties, and worries melt like butter on a hot day.

You do not need to psyche yourself up or live in a state of denial when you feel threatened in any way. “In the midst of your affliction, I am your shield. I am your defender. I am your fortress. I am your refuge. I am your supply. I am your healer. I am your provider. I am your peace. I am your joy. I am your wisdom. I am your strength. I am the glory and the lifter of your head” Psalm 3:3.

The Night Terror 

When you know that He is with you and for you, the monumental problems become microscopic against the largeness of His love and goodness toward you.

But there is an extremely important message here and that is when you know who you are in Christ, when you understand your authority in Him, the ENEMY KNOWS IT TOO. Why would he waste his time trying to attack you?

This is crucial to grasp, and it is the absolute key to understanding you have power and authority over the enemy and anything he would try to throw at you. This is why we can function without fear – no matter what happens. 

When I was confronted with the threat in my bedroom, I knew this was not a battle I had to fight. I did not need to take a stand. I did not need to command that woman to leave. I merely said, “You cannot touch me.”

I knew my authority and there was nothing my attacker could do to me. 

When I related this story to others, many said that the enemy was trying to attack me. I disagree. 

We live in a wicked world full of evil people who may want to rob us or hurt us. That is our reality. I do not believe this was any type of spiritual attack. It was merely an attempted robbery gone very wrong. I would love to have heard the conversation she had when relaying this to her friends.

When we are aware of our authority, we do not have to exercise it. There is no battle. The victory is already won. This is the key to living without fear.
