An Angel With A Message

My husband, Clayton, was nine months old when he was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia. He had improved quickly and was sent home a few days later.

The following week something seemed concerning to his parents. “I think we need to take Clayton back to the hospital,” his mother said to his father, “something is wrong.”

She was right. After two weeks in the hospital without any improvement, the doctors concurred. Clayton contracted polio during his hospital stay. It affected the right side of his body, twisting his right arm behind his back and his right leg bent under the thigh of his left leg.

The doctor shook his head. “I’m sorry, but there is nothing we can do. You need to prepare yourselves with the fact that Clayton will never walk or run again. This is permanent. You will have to train him how to use one hand to do everything because he will never have the use of both arms.”

Why? How could this happen?” Clayton’s father asked over and over again.

There were children in the hospital with polio while Clayton was here,” the doctor said. “Polio is highly contagious in the early stages. Precautions may not have been taken by the hospital staff. It happens.” The doctor’s statement was matter-of-fact yet heart-wrenching for the baby’s parents.

Devastated, his parents had the medical staff’s lame excuse along with the empty hope for Clayton’s cure.

A Miracle!

it was a miracle

Clayton’s dad was a pastor and early the next day he was at the church shoveling coal into the furnace for Sunday morning service.

He dropped to his knees and began to cry. “Why, God? I don’t understand. Why?”

Almost immediately, he felt a calming presence. An angel appeared in front of him and said, “Do not worry about Clayton. He is going to be okay.” That was it. The angel was gone in a flash. Mixed emotions rumbled in Clayton’s dad including joy and bewilderment. He knew what he saw and heard. When would this miracle take place?

As he headed across the property to their house, Clayton’s mother ran toward him. She had not taken the time to put on her coat. With tears running down her cheeks and her hands raised toward heaven, she yelled, “Clayton is healed! Clayton’s healed!”

As she neared her husband she said, “Come quickly. You have to see this.”

An Angel's Message

The two of them rushed into Clayton’s nursery and she handed him the bottle of milk. Clayton immediately reached out with both hands to grab it. The withered side of his body had become straight without any sign of crippling.

They praised God together and this was only the first of many miracles in Clayton’s life
