"Create In Me A Clean Heart" - What Does It Mean?

create in me a clean heart

How often have you sung the chorus, “Create in me a clean heart?” It is a beautiful song but what is the message? Should this be our prayer – asking God to create in us a clean heart?

This was David’s prayer in Psalms 51:10 that many Christians have adopted into their prayer lives. But, it is not a prayer to use after Christ’s death and resurrection.

In David’s day, the sacrifices of the priests in the temple were how they obtained forgiveness of sin. It is not how we receive forgiveness of sin today.

When David wrote that Psalm, he knew what was coming. He knew Christ was coming. He knew he could NOT do this on his own yet he wanted that forgiveness NOW. He wanted that clean heart NOW.

David also knew the sin he committed. He had an affair with a married woman and had that woman’s husband killed. Yet, from the union of David and Bathsheba came Christ’s birth.

Christ, through his death said, “IT IS FINISHED.”  It is the finished work of His death and resurrection that frees us from the curse of the law. We cannot add to it. It is DONE.

Where Christ dwells – in our hearts – it must be pure and holy. By asking for a clean heart we are denying what Christ has already done for us and that He already dwells there

When we beg God to forgive us we are saying we don’t believe He has already done that when He bore our sins on the cross.

We Have A Clean Heart

we have a clean heart

When we pray and ask God, “Oh, God, please create in me a clean heart,” we are denying the truth of the Word. We are saying we don't believe that Christ did that for us. So we keep asking for it.

That prayer is not coming from the Word of God, because God does not contradict His Word. He said He dwells in our spirits. He has made all things new. Our spirit is new. It is holy and righteous before God.

We can stop begging, and start believing that when God says He dwells in our heart, because of Christ, we can know He dwells in our heart, because of Christ. We are clean. We have a clean heart, a clean dwelling place because of what Christ did for us.

It has nothing to do with what we are or are not doing. Jesus said, “It is finished. I paid the price. You are free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1
