What Righteousness Means (And What It Is Not)

what righteousness means

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT RIGHT DOING – IT IS RIGHT BEING

Does God hear your prayer if there is sin in your life? Have you ever felt overwhelmed with guilt or shame as a Christian?

Romans 8:1 says: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”

We are assured of that promise throughout the New Covenant. Yet, often many of us live in the burden of guilt – a tool and a lie from the pit of hell. This is only one of many verses that remind us of right-standing with our Heavenly Father.

There is no condemnation – no guilt. Guilt is one of the things that keep us from receiving everything God has given us.

Guilt is the language spoken by the enemy to make you believe God does not hear your prayers.

What Righteousness Really Means

what righteousness really means

We become sin-conscious instead of righteousness-conscious. We may feel unworthy because of remorse. We tend to concentrate on what WE did instead of what God HAS done for us.

Romans 6:14 says: “For sin shall not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law but under grace.”

Many Christians then ask the question, does this mean I can freely sin and not worry about it? The next verse answers that question:

“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” - Romans 6:15

Grace removes the fear when we mess up and feel guilty. Grace covers our sins and does not permit the enemy to rob us of our joy when we make mistakes. Grace does not give us a license to sin but gives us forgiveness if we do.

Realize deeply that Jesus is our Advocate. Jesus paid the price for our sins, past, present, and future. Because of Jesus, we can stand before God as righteous.

It has nothing to do with what we did or did not do. It has everything to do with what God did for us.

Our Sins Have Been Covered

sins have been covered

Our mind is where the battle rages. But it is our spirit that we need to draw from – take those scriptures that tell you that you are free from guilt and get them into your heart.

Then when the enemy tries to throw up your past, you can remind him of his future. YOUR sins have been covered.

"Your sins have been removed as far as the east is from the west." - Psalms 103.12

God cannot lie. His Word is true. He says you are free from guilt. He says that you walk after the Spirit. God does not dwell in your mind. He does not dwell in your body.

Your spirit is pure and holy and righteous because that is where God dwells.

Satan wants you to strive for perfection because he knows you will never achieve it.

When God looks at us, He sees His Son and what He did for us. He does not see the sin, He sees the blood covering. He sees a child of His who has been redeemed because His son paid the price.

If this were not true, then Jesus would have to die for each sin, over and over again. He died once. So we can come to God righteous – and cleansed of all sin.

If you try to do it on your own and think that if you read your Bible enough,  pray enough, or are good enough, God will forgive you – that is the lie the devil would love you to believe.

He wants you to strive for perfection because he knows you will never achieve it.

We Are Forgiven

we are forgiven

You are already forgiven because of what Jesus did for you – not what you did. You do not deserve it nor can you earn it. It is a GIFT from God Almighty.

Please note that in Romans 8:1 there are no conditions. It is stated as a fact and a promise.

If you do sin, remember that Jesus is our intercessor – our advocate. The price for our sin has been paid. It was paid ONCE for all. When Jesus died he said, “It is finished.” His work was complete. The debt was paid.

Galatians 2:16 says, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

Every one of us should jump for joy when we get the understanding of the impact of that verse – that message – that principle – that truth.

Read that verse, repeat it, and pray it as a prayer of thanksgiving that you are NOT under guilt because of the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.

To paraphrase: God imputes righteousness not to those who strive to obey the law but to anyone who believes in His Son.

We Are Righteous

we are righteous

And in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Romans 4:5 – 8 tells us that we are blessed because our transgressions are forgiven, our sins are covered and the Lord will NEVER count them against us.

Speak this out loud to yourself: I am not righteous because of what I have done or not done. I am righteous only because of the blood and finished work of Jesus at the cross. PERIOD.
